I never understood what is so great about sesame seeds. I know in the Middle East they make sesame seed candy bars, but they don't really taste that great, and a hamburger bun without sesame seeds would taste just as good. Why are these seeds so ubiquitous?

I would definitely say that picture is of pine nuts, not sesame seeds.
