  • I can't find anything to back this up anywhere but here. Is this based on the (compltely incorrect) supposition that the nose was shot off some time in the last 350 years? It is clear from historical accounts that is not true.

I am interested to know where you got this info.

    Thanks :)

  • Please people: why start a blog or post a message if you don't know facts. For as little as I know, the truth is: the nose was dynamited off by a crazy local more than 300 years ago. Not Alex de Great and certainly not Napoleon.

  • This fact is complete bullshit. If it was in a warehouse in Sicily, the world would have known by now and it would be on display. Get your facts straight before you post crap.

  • Uhm, I think it was the French that blew off the nose using a cannonball in the past 300 years, not a local. Not sure where I heard this; based on memory. (= Don't quote any of this...

  • Actually if you think about it, Alexander and Napoleon didnt want to destroy artifacts, but preserve them along with the cultures they conquered. Much easier to control if you dont force people to change. These stories, if you know the history of these men, cannot be true. I tend to believe the story of a Sufi Muslim ruler ordering the nose removed to make it look "less human". This story fits in much better with history as many Muslims leaders saw such as "idolatry" an converted or destroyed such items.

  • I have attempted to look up references for a number of posts on here and have come up empty handed. A fun but made up fact every day is a better title I think.

  • For all you people who can't take the facts, The nose and lips of the Sphinx was shot off by napolean and his troops because he could'nt take the fact that the great kings of Egypt, Africa were black. He could tell by the facial features such as some nubian/black africans having a broad nose and big lips. An artist who accompinied napolean drew a picture and today we could tell from the picture that the head was black.
